Everybody's a photographer thanks to incredible developments in digital technology. Gone are the exciting days when I used to think twice about clicking the shutter button, considering the 'value' of capturing a subject or scene and then processing my own film in a New York City apartment darkroom. Gone are the days where 'grain' was part of the art of photography, now we expect perfection and that's a recipe for self doubt. Each photo in this portfolio was agonised over, 'is it good enough'?
Some may think that it's just a matter of pressing a button and choosing one of the 100's of pictures you take as the one you'll post on Facebook to show the world how amazing you are. But I've come to learn that while we may have expensive equipment and take good photos, not all photos have the elements that make it great. And that is my goal right there. With each image there is thought behind it that relates to composition, the blend of colours, light (or lack thereof) and the story that a photo should tell- is it beauty, romance, adventure, love, strength, fragility- pointless?
I hope to one day take a 'great' photo and until that day I'll keep trying.
Photography is an art, having attended the Johannesburg School of Arts as a ballet major, I learned that 'art' is as varied as the people who create it- you may love it or you may not. But one thing we can agree on, is that each photographer has a unique style, an 'eye' for the details only they see and a creative imagination that means there's space for us all.
Here are some of my most recent photos taken with my NIKON D500 and lovely FUJIFILM XT 2.
